Capture and Relocation

Ditjabe Wildlife Services have the ability and equipment to take on any capture. Whether it calls for the need to use the traditional sail boma (used to capture most of the almost seven thousand caught and relocated in the 2009 season), net boma in open flat grasslands or chemical immobilization (always carried out by highly skilled and professional veterinarians).

The skill is to catch an animal in such manner as to make its chances with relocation as good as possible and here Ditjabe Wildlife Services are annually succeeding in keeping mortalities below the average considered by the industry and still striving day by day to do even better.

Rhino Capture

Rhinos are darted using an immobilizing drug. If the capture team reacts quickly the rhino could be walked into the recovery vehicle as soon as the drug starts taking effect. Else the rhino is blindfolded to prevent any visual stimuli in producing adrenalin and counteracting the drug. The animal is then partly woken up by the veterinarian on site and carefully guided into the recovery trailer or transport crate.

Giraffe Capture

Most giraffe captures are done by immobilization. There is an option to use the traditional sail boma’s if the habitat and numbers allows it. After immobilization a giraffe is blindfolded, its ears are blocked with cotton and a set of ropes and a halter is attached to the animal. The veterinarian on site will then reverse the immobilizing drug completely and the animal will be guided with the ropes onto the recovery trailer from where it will be cross-loaded onto a specialized giraffe transport trailer.

Chemical Capture

Depending on the species different drugs are used by the veterinarian on site to immobilize animals. This can be done in order to capture an animal for translocation or to do blood and TB tests on buffalo, Feline-aids and vitamin deficiencies in lions or any veterinarian procedure as required by the animal.

Mass Capture

Mass capture can be done by using a sail boma or a net boma. Depending on the habitat the capture farm is located in the capture team will use the most effective method to catch the animals with the least amount of stress on these animals that must be capture.

Depending on the species being captured each animal is tranquilized as needed by our capable staff.

Hippo Capture

Because darting hippo’s poses a great risks of drowning we have build a state of the art passive capture boma for this purpose. A movable boma is erected next to the dam or river. The piece of water is then fenced off using electricity to prevent the hippos from grazing outside during the night. Lucerne is then placed at the entrance and inside the boma. Infrared cameras and a remote trigger for the trapdoor are then used to trap the hippos as soon as they are inside the boma. From here they are loaded via a loading ramp straight onto the trucks.

Transportation

Ditjabe Wildlife Services have a fleet of game vehicles that will cater for all you game transportation requirements. Transport after auctions can also be arranged by contacting us.

Holding and quarantine facilities

Ditjabe Wildlife Services have access to quarantine holding facilities situated conveniently less than 45 min from Pretoria, making them ideal for the quarantine of export animals through OR Tambo International.

Import and Export

Ditjabe Wildlife Services are constantly involved in both the export and import of various game species. Various species have been imported from other Southern African countries. Sourcing suitable animals for export is easily accomplished through our large client network in South Africa and animals are quarantined in state of the art holding facilities until all the policies and procedures of all parties involved are met. Animals have been successfully exported to Namibia, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zimbabwe.

Through-out the export phase animals are constantly monitored by a qualified veterinarian and members of Ditjabe Wildlife Services, in thus ensuring the best welfare of the animal and the greatest peace of mind to our valued customers.

Veterinary Services

In not compromising the health and safety of our wildlife, Ditjabe Wildlife Services don’t have only one qualified veterinarian delivering quality service to out clients. Working in conjunction with Bosveld Wildsdienste, Hendrik Hansen and Pierre Bester are always available to our clients. We are also comfortable working with a veterinarian that’s prescribed to us by the client if they insist.

Pierre Bester is also on the board of the WTA (Wildlife Translocation Association) and both are actively involved in the breading of exotics species.

Respecting the law, these veterinarians are responsible for the immobilization, blood sampling, micro-chipping, pregnancy tests or any other veterinarian procedure, on behalf of Ditjabe Wildlife Services.

Helicopter Services

Ditjabe Wildlife Services uses a Robinson R44 for all capture operations. This is particularly useful for darting operations and for doing game counts.
